Y4 Visit Maths in the Workplace

On Monday 5th October, Year 4 walked down the hill into Moorswater to visit Howdens and A2Z Printers as part of their real life maths learning. They had such a wonderful trip developing their maths learning of area and the importance of careful measurements when making kitchens and signs.
Thinking about future careers and how we can use our learning is important to us at Dobwalls combined with our SECRET skills. Plan-do-review and being organised were just two of many SECRET skills used today.
Class teacher Oli Jones, " The children have been learning about area and careful measurements in the classroom and we wanted to bring Maths alive by linking the unit to real life around them."
Howdens manager Bradley Champion, "It was fantastic to welcome local school children to Howdens Liskeard to demonstrate how we use maths in everyday business operations, helping them see the relevance of their 'real life maths' learning. We hope they the visit gave the children an insight into the importance of maths in everyday life, without realising they were using their mathematical skills while having fun. It was great that the school is giving its children the opportunity to step into the real world to experience how they might use their learning in the future".
At A2Z printing the children were able to make their own signs and learnt about sizes of prints for signs around our local area including Dobwalls.
A BIG thank you to Howdens and A2Z printing for such engaging activities and being so welcoming to us all, such an excellent trip. We look forward to visiting again!
