Health and Well-being Week
Monday 18th - Friday 23rd May saw our annual health and well-being week. This is an important week of our Dobwalls school calendar where all children spend time learning and remembering key life skills to keep themselves safe. There was a range of learning including road safety, beach safety, online safety, first aid, electrical safety and keeping healthy. We also spent time reflecting our memory garden area. Mrs Pipe read us all a story and every child had the opportunity to make a label for the memory garden.
Lerryn class (EYFS) learnt about electrical safety and dangerous medicines. Although we use electricity every day, it can be dangerous and we must follow rules to keep ourselves safe. We learnt schools do lots of things to make sure children are safe around electricity: All electrical equipment in school is tested every year by an electrician to make sure it is safe to use. At schools, electrical equipment is fitted by an electrician. If something needs fixing, this is also done by an electrician. The children had to circle the dangers in a kitchen independently and in pairs decide what was a medicine and what was not a medicine. A medicine is something you take if you aren’t feeling well.
Year One have been learning about fire safety. They then went to the field and played the game smoke or fire. When they heard fire they had to ‘stop, drop and roll’, when they heard smoke, they had to crawl along the floor just like they would in a smoke-filled room. They have been learning about beach safety and the precautions we need to take to ensure we are always safe and do not get into danger.
Loveny class explored the important topic of cyberbullying. Using sentence stems, we created thoughtful debates based on real-life scenarios, helping us to understand how to respond to and prevent online bullying. We also tried out a variety of well-being strategies to help us manage our emotions and look after our mental health. One of our favourites was the 5 senses activity, which we did while listening to calming music in the background. Finally, we spent some quiet time in our memory garden, where we created something special to leave behind. It was a lovely moment to pause, reflect, and remember.
Valency Class learned about fire safety, cyberbullying, and road safety, to helping them understand how to stay safe and healthy. They had a thoughtful discussion about bereavement and created drawings of loved ones on wooden sticks to place in the memory garden.
Year 4 explored many important ways to keep safe and look after our wellbeing. They learned about online safety, including how to recognise and prevent cyberbullying. In road safety, they discussed how to stay safe when crossing or near roads and created colourful posters to help younger children remember these rules. They also talked about medicine safety and practised electrical safety by checking our classroom devices for safety stickers and role-playing ways to stay safe at home. Their fire safety session was full of fun as they role-played the “drop, stop, and roll” technique to remember how to stay safe if there’s ever a fire. To support emotional wellbeing, they visited the memory garden to reflect on bereavement and created thoughtful signs to place in the plant pots in memory of loved ones no longer with us. Throughout the week, we enjoyed wellbeing activities such as breathing exercises, dancing, talking with friends, exercise, clapping rhythms, and singing — all to help us feel happy and healthy.
In Year 5, they explored crucial topics that promote a safe and healthy lifestyle. In electrical safety sessions, they learned about the potential dangers of electricity, emphasising the importance of not overloading sockets and safely using appliances. Online safety was another highlight; discussing the significance of securing personal information and identifying potential risks in the digital world. Additionally, they spent time creating a memory garden, where students designed and planted wooden plaques in memory of loved ones. This activity not only sparked creativity but also fostered emotional well-being, helping us appreciate our connections.
Year 6 discussed a range of ways to keep ourselves safe including: fire safety, electrical safety and road safety. They also looked at medicinal safety and created posters to keep ourselves and our families safe with medicine at home. Year 6 undertook a session on loss and change in which they visited the school memory garden to create their own 'memory trees' to add to the garden.
